Stay Informed: DOT's Oral Fluid Testing 2025 Progress
As we enter 2025, we want to provide you with an update regarding the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) oral fluid testing introduction.
In May 2023, the DOT published a final rule authorizing regulated employers to use oral fluid drug testing as an alternative to urine drug testing. However, before employers can implement oral fluid testing, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services must approve two laboratories for oral fluid testing, and the testing kits themselves must also be approved.
As of January 2025, a testing kit has received approval for use but is not yet widely accessible. Additionally, no laboratories have been certified. However, several labs are working through the certification process. We anticipate that both conditions will be met in 2025, enabling DOT-regulated employers to start using oral fluid testing.
DriverCheck continues to communicate regularly with our laboratory and DOT contacts to ensure we have the most up-to-date information.
