The Government of Alberta is implementing changes to parts of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code. Effective March 31, 2023, Part 16 of the OHS Code will require employers to ensure workers are fit tested for the hearing protection devices they use and wear.

New Hearing Protection Fit Testing: Top 5 Things to Know

The Government of Alberta is implementing changes to parts of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code.
Effective March 31, 2023, a key aspect of the code will be implemented which requires employers in Alberta to ensure workers are fit tested for the hearing protection devices they use and wear. This change is intended to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.
Fit testing of the devices must meet CSA Standard Z94.2-14 (R2019), Hearing Protection Devices – Performance, Selection, Care and Use.
Fit testing of hearing protection can be conducted either quantitatively or qualitatively.
